RICHARD HAROLD MILLS, 59, of WALL, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Admitted to the California Bar in 1973, he worked as a corporate lawyer in Beverly Hills, Calif., and later conducted criminal jury trials while on the staff of the Los Angeles City Attorney. He returned to New Jersey in 1975 and served as a deputy attorney general for the State of New Jersey. In 1982, he was admitted and qualified as an attorney and obitpix counsellor of the U.S. District Court District of New Jersey, the State of California and of the Supreme Court of the United States. He joined the law firm of Lautman, Henderson, Mills & Wight in 1976 and handled civil litigation there for 17 years. He maintained a private practice in Wall for the past 10 years with his legal assistant of 21 years, Mrs. Roni Johnson. He was a member of the first graduating class of Wall High School, Class of 1961. He attended Monmouth College, graduating first in his class in 1970, and The Harvard Law School, where his academic performance won him a position as an editor of the Harvard Law Review. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard in 1973. He served with the U.S. Air Force from 1963 to 1967. Born in Neptune, he was a lifelong resident of Wall.
He was predeceased by his father, William H. Mills. Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Saundra Shefter Mills; two sons, Richard William Mills of San Francisco, and Randy Shefter Mills of Wall; a daughter, Holly Rebecca Mills of Boston; his mother, Louise Thomas Mills of Brick; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Albert S. and Gail Mills of Spring Hill, Fla., William W. and Althea Mills of Quinby, Va., and James B. and Diane Mills of Fillmore, Calif.; and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary L. Mills, and Judith M. and Dayle Ritchey of Point Pleasant.
Friends are invited to call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan. Memorial contributions can be made in his name to the Wall Community First Aid Squad, PO Box 166, Allenwood, NJ 08720.
