so i have to get my taxes done. nothing spectacular, nothing like the hassle from last year, have only NJ taxes this year and 1 receipt (never have had a receipt/deduction before) for the new computer...
my regular tax guy - whom i have never met, and just mail the forms into him (actually one of his associates, who wasn't all that impressive last year ) is charging me out the arse this year.
thinking about going to H&R Block... although i called the one office nearby this afternoon to get a price range and i told them the "blah blah blah only nj taxes, blah blah blah, one receipt, blah blah blah how much do you charge?"
the response i got from the squeaky voiced twit on the opposite end of the receiver?
"um do you mean you want, like, all your taxes filed... like forms?"
me: "excuse me? yes. i want my taxes filed and i want to get a refund - and i was wondering what your rates are"
twit: "um, like, how much did you want back?"
me: "eh, as much as possible..."
what the eff!?
so, i may shell out my left arm for my regular guy, but i wanted my $ asap... last year my accountant told me to mail it certified mail... and it sat in east bumbleschnock tax pavillion waiting for someone to sign the thing and send it over to the tax refund folks... and the accountant is saying they want like $450 to get this done this year and i have to pay before they give me the completed forms... i'm thinking no.
looking like h&r block.
twit-girl said to me after consulting with someone else:
"um... if you want up to a thousand dollars back we charge $91."
me: "well, i am hoping to get a bit more than $1000 back."
twit: "um... well, how much?"
me: "how about you go through your rates?"
twit: "um... well... um... from $1001 to $1500 it's $101"
(pause)
me: "could you tell me how much the next bracket is?"
twit: "um... oh... you want more?"
(pause... slight noise of me breathing calming breaths)
me: "could you humor me?"
twit: "um, from $1501 - $2000 is $111"
(pause.)
twit: "oh... uh... from $2001 - $7000 it's $131"
me: thank you.
i am a little leary - gee, wonder why - they've been (sort of) okay previously, but it's always seemed like i was doing all the work... and now i have a receipt... waiting for that to get screwed up...
any accountants out there looking for an hour's work in an attempt to get me a hearty refund back... legally?
i feel that if i go back to H&R Block though, i am sort of delibrately sabotaging myself...
catch 22, my friends, catch 22.
