HOOKAH HOOKAH HOOKAH... LOBSTAH
April 27, 2007 7:28 PM

sooooooooo... i was talking to my friend cathy today - haven't yapped with her in a while - in fact, i haven't seen her since last july. anyway, her birthday is June 24th - which is 3 days after mine...

when i was speaking with her she'd mentioned that it was a milestone birthday for her (i'm only going to be 37) and that she was thinking of hightailing it to scotland by herself but then we had an idea --- how about she and i trek to Maine for our birthday weekend!?!

so, i think we're going to look around - see what the rates are for bar harbor or wherever.

ANYONE EVER GO TO MAINE? ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TOWNS OR PLACES TO STAY??

i want a lobster roll.

Whatchoosayin'?? (9 yapped)

Hey Erin!
This is my first comment (ever). I felt compelled to comment when I saw you that you want to spend your birthday weekend in Maine. I was born and bred in the great state of Maine. I have lived here for the last 38 years! I live in the tiny town of Pembroke. It is about as far east as you can get in the great USA. If you are looking for a great adventure, you should check out Eastport or Lubec. It is about a 5 1/2 hour drive from Portland, but it is well worth it. Check out www.eastport.net

I love living in downeast Maine and I think you would really enjoy it! I even have a friend that has his own lobstah boat. Lucky me!

Summered in Goose Rocks Bch all my life. Close enough to Kennebunkport but nicer. Also Cape Porpoise is between the two and wicked lobsters are waiting for ya! Email me if you want details. Have to book now since that's the height of season!

We go to Ogunquit almost every year for our "girl's Weekend" and stay at the Anchorage. We also go to Kennebunkport for great shopping and beautiful scenery. Make sure you drive by the "Wedding Cake House", too!

hi erin,
i drove to kennebunk maine for my brother's wedding. it was very beautiful there. they were married at Laudholm Farm in wells maine-i think was a working diary farm. there was also a beautiful franciscan monastery we walked around. http://www.framon.net/ http://www.franciscanguesthouse.com/monastery.html
everything was there was great and so much cooler than texas. the mcdonalds served lobster tacos!

In 2001 we stayed at a b&b, The Black Friar Inn. Was great!! I would recomend it. Geddy's was great fun.. If you're diving - bring your bikes - it's a very freindly town.

Hi Erin, I lived in Maine for 6 years, in Topsham (just moved to Arizona last August). Bar Harbor is great, along with the Park. It's quite a drive to get there from Portland, if that's where you'd fly into. but the drive along Rte 1 is beautiful. You should check out the MidCoast area in your research - I absolutely loved Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor. They have a wonderful botanical gardens, lots of great restuarants and shops. You could do a day trip from there to Monhegan Island - there's a regular ferry service. The best (BEST) place to get a lobster roll is at Red's in Wiscassett (which is on the way to Boothbay). During high season the lines start at 10:30 or so, but it's worth every second of the wait. Sarah's in Wiscasset is also a great place to nosh. There's a great BBQ place in Bath, Maine called Beale Street BBQ. And, as recommended by others, take plenty of bug repellent. The skeeters and black flys can be pretty thick depending on the time of summer. Have a great time!! (It's worth it to go further north than Portland - Kennebunk, Kittery, Old Orchard Beach and the other far-south coastal towns are one big tourist trap and a pain to navigate during summer high season.)

[note from GC: thanks! yes, red's is where i want the lobster roll - saw it on the food network and also awesome photos on Flickr. not flying up. driving the Phooka (my convertible. so it better be sunny!) thanks again!]

Erin

I've visited the coast and driven inland Maine, but one of the cooler things was the "end of the Appalachian Trail" - it ends in southern Maine somewhere (can't tell you the city, it's escaping me just now). Jackson, ME is also kind of cool, a teeny town with a huge store/gas station/ice cream place. Camping is always nice there since it's not too hot even in July (ok, unless you count the week I went camping there and it was 104). BRING MOSQUITO REPELLENT - they grow 'em big there!

I have spent extensive time (probably six months) in Maine. For the real "touristy" areaa you will want to go to the Kinneybunk area. That is in southern Maine and usually filled with people, 35 and up for the mast part, from the Boston area. Have not spent a large amount of time in the Bar Harbour area but have heard nothing but good things. The best I can suggest is to do your research before going. Also I will call my buddy Steve for you as he lives in southern Maine and may be of some assistance. Go Sox!

Erin - Maine is my second home. I usually stay on a little island about an hour from Bar Harbor (Bah Hahbah) which is probably too far for you. But if you're in BH, you will love Geddy's Pub. They have amazing pizza, and it's a really fun place. I forget the name of it, but if you're looking online and find "the cheapest motel in Bar Harbor" - skip it. I stayed there. They also host roaches. Yyyccchhh..
