well, i am posting from my laptop at the moment (none of my laptops, or the little desktop, have design software on 'em)
i just had my big desktop machine (pc. yeah, yeah, i know, all you mac lovers... i have a mac too, but rarely use it) anyway, just had my big desktop - with pretty much my career and life on it - picked up by Dan at Monmouth Computer.
why?
because i am screwed.
i got a blue screen error:
Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate
so... i rebooted.
got it again.
and again.
and again.
feck. so i called dan and he just picked it up. he helped me retrieve my data and brought my machine back to life last july. hopefully he can do it again. scary stuff this blue screen biz.
of course, all of my proposals and client files (website files) are on that machine. he said i wouldn't lose my software or the files. and yes, i know that it' probably a simple fix - but, like folks have me desgn websites because they'd rather have things done right, i would rather have a pro fix my machine and spend a few bucks than slog through google trying to find the right fix and attempting it myself.
he's supposed to call me about the machine. hopefully today... crossing fingers. thank god i have other computers in the house... otherwise i would freak.

Whatchoosayin'?? (4 yapped)
I've never used it, but Norton Ghost might do. As I understand it, it makes an exact copy of your hard drive. So everything gets saved and restored exactly as it was sector per sector.
I'm sure there are other sw that do something similar.
[note from GC: thanks. it's with the repair guy though.]

OY! Chickpea! I am keeping my fingers crossed for you! That really bites big time! Maybe this guru guy of yours can make a copy of your software so you never have to worry about losing it? I don't know much about pc's and this one I have so far isn't giving me any problems. When I had ME though on my old pc.....I had to reinstall that program so many times! AAARRRGGGHHH!! Of course all my software came on disks, so I could just stick 'em in and reload them.....its different with you though, all your work is on there. If I were you I wouldn't get any email off from the pc anymore or IM's etc. You never know what kind of virus crap is going around, use your other pc's for that stuff.

Oh man. that happened a few months ago at work, a routine upgrade for my outlook email and they lost everything on my computer. 20 some template designs - GONE.
Crossing my fingers for ya!!

You have a back-up drive, right?
[note from GC: i do. i have a MyBook drive thing... alas, i don't have stuff from the last few weeks backed up on it... granted, most of my html files and stuff can be snagged off ftp servers. but my software is on the main machine... and if i lose that, i am screwed... ]
