that's right. i nearly drowned.
how?
well, i - being impatient - couldn't wait for the neti pot that i ordered on amazon to get here (seriously, the delivery date is october 8th. please.)
sooooooooo... i went out - with my allergy-riddled swollen sinus head and found a natural food store... bought me a neti pot, neti salt and also (i haven't tried THIS yet) some sort of neti salt with zinc solution.
so i get home and i mix the salt concoction into my warm water in the neti...
i tilt my head like the pictures describe...
i shove the neti spout up my right nostril...
water rushes out of my OTHER nostril and also starts flushing nose ICK down my throat...
*cough* *sputter* *choke*
okay. stop.
shoved the spout up my other nostril... tilted the head... raised the neti pot slightly...
dribble out my other nostril... okay... not bad... eh... *choke* *cough* *sputter* *gag*
the water (and other crap) is coming out of my mouth now.... yes i am trying to breathe out of my mouth
okay. stop.
refill the neti pot. try again.
this time, it's not as crazy... it's still going down my throat - not as much. gotta work on my head tilt.
the nose feels fantastic right now. no headache. i'll probably go through my neti ritual later tonight as well....
my shirt that i was wearing is basically drenched from the drowning incident though.

I just went and purchased a neti pot. It was difficult and I too felt like I was drowning at first...but, now it is wonderful. I'm ready to do it again. Thanks for the info...my headache thanks you as well!!

You need to bend over further - put your forehead down toward the sink. I find I really have to focus on breathing through my mouth too. I, like you, resisted using it when my friend suggested it for my allergies, but desperate times drove me to it. I am now off all allergy meds and my inhaler.
I hope it helps you too!

...OMG .. there HAS to be a better way ... TISSUES ... decongestants ... that's some evil contraption there GC .. I'd be careful with that thing if I were you. ( .. looks like if you rub it just right .. ??? .. does a little puff of smoke turn into a turban-clad individual with arms tightly clasped at his chest?? ...)

Letterman had a guy drink a beverage (a beer I think) though his nostril.... perhaps this was his way to "practice" ;)
Feel better!

"the sinus rinse" is the brand I use... somewhat similar to the neti pot. but the nose "ick" gets flushed out the other nostril, not the throat. it's all gross but the end result is wonderful... a nose you can breath out of! good luck with whatever you do!
[note from GC: nice. yeah the ICK is supposed to go out the other nostril. i just tried it again and got my head tilting correct and no throat involvement thankfully.]
