BEE IN MY BONNET
February 24, 2009 11:38 PM

so, gigglemom saw an advert in the paper the other day for a webmaster position pretty close-by.
it's a county job and I think I am going to send my resume. What the heck, right?

don't get me wrong, I love designing sites for comedians. the only issues I have are the lack of benefits. I have health insurance that I pay for right now, but, that, coupled with having no set "pay day" is disconcerting.

I usually send out my invoices at the end of the month... then, I wind up depending on when the accountants or clients send out their checks. Sometimes I'm hunting people down for months (others I don't need to even send invoices to because they automatically send $$... which is lovely)

Needless to say... it's been scary.

The thought "what would happen if I lost one of my clients?" is always in the back of my head nagging at me. It would definitely cause a domino effect with everything monetarily.

That thought has been growling at me for a while...

I love working for myself, BUT, I also miss interacting with others. Living and working at home has it's pluses and minuses. I've gained 45 pounds since I started gigglechickinteractive.com full-time from home.

The fear of an unsteady paycheck has really hit a nerve.

Personally, I don't want to look for a job in NYC --- first and foremost because of gigglemom's health. Secondly, because the commute would kill me if I started that up again. Third, the cost of commuting isn't worth it.

When I saw the ad in the paper for this local place something just called out. So, I've got to update my resume tomorrow and fill in the past few years on it... as well as on my online portfolio.

So much to do.... aaaaaand I've got to get ashes tomorrow.

Good luck. I've been out of work since July and can't, for my life, find an IT position that I have held for over 30 years. Seems Computer Operators are not necessary any more, as they're being outsourced or covered by a canned package. You have a problem? They dial in and fix it. No need for us old folks to put paper in a printer or monitor jobs that are running. The days of Operations are a thing of the past. If only they had waited 14 more years, I would have been retired and not given a rats kazootie. But, hopefully things will look up. Erin, with the way society is getting laid off, the thought of medical and other benefits must be attractive. Go for it!

I say take a stab at it. What are they going to say, "No" or "You're over-qualified"? Well, ok, there you have it, but at least you tried. Thia may also be an opportunity to get some time away from GM for a few hours. I love my mom and take care of her daily, too, but my time at work is a welcome diversion from doing nearly everything for her.

On another note, does your parrish priest smear an inordinately large amount of ashes on you? I don't know what it is, but everyone in line before me gets these cute little "Bindi dots" of ashes, and when I get up there, he really digs in and I get a splotch as big as Gorbachev's birthmark. My aunt, who is a nun, says that's just more of a blessing, but somehow I doubt it! HA HA!

Good luck on the job application!

Good luck on the job app! These times are scary for sure, I hope that you get the steady paycheck!
You sound like you need some interaction with other working adults since you give so much of your time to GM. I'm sure that GM appreciates what you do for her, but maybe the space will help both of you overall.

Hey, a county job! (translation: fabulous benefits)! Sending good luck prayers and vibes your way :)

On a totally different note, the Pope has given you folks the wonderful gift of our own beloved Archbishop Timothy Dolan. I know you're actually in Jersey, but I think of you as somewhat of a New Yorker as well. He's a wonderfully kind, funny, humble Irishman, and I'm pretty sure you will approve. I'm Lutheran and I think he's great! He's been a huge asset to our city. We Milwaukeeans are extremely proud of and happy for him, but so sad to see him go. I look forward to hearing about him on a national level.

Carol: Your "Gorbachev's birthmark" comment made me choke! :)

glad to see you back posting a bit more frequently :-) good luck with the job interview...

it's always smart for a gal to have a little "Plan B" action going on in the background.

It looks like we have similar ideas on this subject.

Mostly that’ s because most people don’ t realize how many skills they do have. If you have office skills, for example, you may be able to find work as a virtual assistant. If you have transportation you might try mystery shopping , although it can.
